چکیده

The variability of the high-energy gamma ray sources in the Third EGRET catalog is analyzed by a new method. We re-analyze the EGRET data to calculate a likelihood function for the flux of each source in each observation, both for detections and upper limits. These functions can be combined in a uniform manner with a simple model of the flux distribution to characterize the flux variation by a confidence interval for the relative standard deviation of the flux. The main result is a table of these values for almost all the cataloged sources. As expected, the identified pulsars are steady emitters and the blazars are mostly highly variable. The unidentified sources are heterogeneous, with greater variation at higher Galactic latitude. There is an indication that pulsar wind nebulae are associated with variable sources. There is a population of variable sources along the Galactic plane, concentrated in the inner spiral arms. Subject headings: methods: data analysis – methods: statistical – gamma rays: observations

Low-latitude Gamma-ray Sources: Correlations and Variability

A review of the main characteristics of low-latitude sources in the third EGRET catalog is presented. There are 75 unidentified gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET at |b| < 10◦. About a half of these sources are spatially correlated with potential galactic gamma-ray emitters such as supernova remnants, OB associations and early-type stars with very strong stellar winds. The other half is formed...

Gamma ray astrophysics: the EGRET results

Cosmic gamma rays provide insight into some of the most dynamic processes in the Universe. At the dawn of a new generation of gamma-ray telescopes, this review summarizes results from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the principal predecessor mission studying high-energy photons in the 100 MeV energy range. EGRET viewed a gammaray sky do...

A Systematic Search for Short-term Variability of EGRET Sources

The 3rd EGRET Catalog of High-energy Gamma-ray Sources contains 170 unidentified sources, and there is great interest in the nature of these sources. One means of determining source class is the study of flux variability on time scales of days; pulsars are believed to be stable on these time scales while blazars are known to be highly variable. In addition, previous work has demonstrated that 3...

Correlation between gamma-ray and far-infrared luminosity for EGRET-detected sources

In this paper, we present a strong correlation of the gamma-ray (above 100MeV) luminosity with the far-infrared (60μm from IRAS) luminosity for 17 blazars detected by EGRET aboard CGRO. This indicates that the gamma-ray and far-infrared emission are both beamed and suggests a direct link between them. This suggestion is also supported by the identical dominance of energy budget and the rapid ti...

High Energy Gamma-ray Emission from Blazars: Egret Observations

We will present a summary of the observations of blazars by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). EGRET has detected high energy γray emission at energies greater than 100 MeV from more that 50 blazars. These sources show inferred isotropic luminosities as large as 3× 10 ergs s. One of the most remarkable characteristics of the EGRET o...
